Presented by Elizabeth (Lissa) Gilbert

Lissa was born in Fort Leavenworth, KS where her dad was stationed in early 60’s. Lissa was one of the early rubella babies before the outbreak. Due to being an Army Brat, Lissa lived in 6 states and West Berlin, Germany. Lissa grew up orally. Lissa first learned the ABC’s when she was 9 at a camp. During my high school in Virginia, I learned more sign language, but not fluently. I graduated from Berlin American High School in ’82. As she was enrolled at California State University, Northridge, she was exposed to Deaf Culture and was able to use ASL fluently. It took her 12 years (on and off) to finish her education at CSUN, due to not being diagnosed with ADD. After graduating at CSUN, she moved to Arizona after obtaining employment as an ASL teacher at Phoenix College. She is a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the past 7.5 years. Since MA is required for her job, she attended University of Arizona, majoring in Rehabilitation Counseling. While she was at UofA, she was diagnosed with ADD. She received my MA degree in 2008.

Kim has worked as a Labor/Delivery nurse for 15 years here in the valley at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center. She has experience in all phases and types of LDR and often works with high risk patients. Her best friend and her daughter are interpreters and her soon to be son-in-law is Deaf.

Assemblies of God Convention - August 1st - 5th

Big time for Assemblies of God convention in Phoenix in August 1 - 5. You can register and come to join with Deaf and Interpreters,too. (see below on website under Assemblies of God)

There will have National Fellowship for Deaf people in convention or booths or lunch or evening services(most deaf) providing the interpreting service, too.

Evening services will be held in the U.S. Airways Arena.

Business Sessions and Wednesday Morning GC Service will be held in the Phoenix Convention Center.

We will have a few interpreters for Deaf to be there. We will meet National Fellowship for Deaf over there. You may meet them every night services while there will have interpreters for Deaf in crowd with NF people. During the day time, you may check in convention if you see Kevin Babin to interpret for NF group in business meeting. Also, there are lot of booths(hearing) but go to check too.

You need to register and pay $10 for one week but you must have badge all the times. Why not to go to check out and meet Deaf .

I understand that Cindy Dively will be in Women's Ministry lunch on Wed. Cost $40 dollars
Emory Dively will be in US Missionary Lunch on Friday.Cost $35 dollars. You need to register online if you want to join with them. They will provide an interpreter for Deaf,too.

GENERAL COUNCIL APPROACHES

In just 31 days, thousands will gather at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Arizona, to attend the 54th General Council. The Influence Conference kicks off General Council on August 1, 2011.

According to Sheila Mixer, Convention Services Group registration coordinator, nearly 13,700 people have already registered for General Council and more than 2,700 people have already registered for the Influence Conference. This year, General Council attendees can attend the Influence Conference for free by submitting their General Council registration form.

Early registration forms can be submitted online until July 31. Although the simplest way to register is online, registration can also be submitted by fax or mail. If mailed, the registration form
must be postmarked by tomorrow, July 1, to receive the pre-registration rate.

To register or download a registration form, do so online at http://generalcouncil.ag.org/register, fax a registration form to 417-862-7891 (credit card information required) or mail a registration form to 54th General Council Registration, 1445 N. Boonville Avenue, Springfield, MO 65802.

Dr. Lawrence (Larry) Forestal 1939-2011

In Loving Memory of Dr. Lawrence (Larry) Forestal

“…in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your
years.” Abraham Lincoln

Dr. Lawrence (Larry) Harold Forestal, 71, passed away on May 11, 2011 after a sudden illness. He was born and raised in Asbury Park, New Jersey on June 18, 1939. He attended the New Jersey School for the Deaf.

Larry was a wellrespected leader, having served as President of the National Association of the Deaf, President and board member of the American Sign Language Teachers Association, President of the Illinois Association of the Deaf, as well as leading and serving on numerous professional and civic committees. In recognition of his leadership contributions, he received the Knights of Flying Fingers award from the National Association of the Deaf.

Dr. Forestal had a long and distinguished career as an educator and administrator. Most recently, he was Lecturer/Coordinator of the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies program at San Diego State University in California. Prior to that, he was a professor of American Sign Language at several colleges and universities, among them, Mesa Community College, University of Wisconsin, Arizona State University, University of Utah, Frederick Community College, Suffolk Community College and State University of New York. He also was a high school Social Studies teacher, a Curriculum Specialist and school Principal. He published Attitudes of American Deaf Leaders toward Sign Language Interpreters, as well as articles related to history, leadership, American Sign Language and interpreting.

Larry received his BA from Gallaudet University in History, MA from Gallaudet University in Education of the Deaf and Ph.D. from New York University in Deafness Rehabilitation. He is survived by his beloved wife, Geraldine Francini; his children, Kara Rudden (John), Darla, Sean (Megan), and Colin; stepdaughter, Natalie Murphy (Keith); grandchildren, Lana, George, Alex, Ashley, and Caitlin; stepgrandchildren, Steven, Montana, Kassidy, Delaney, Alannah, Taylor, and Johna; and great grandchild Vasilios. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Ann Darnell; survived by his sister, Edna Olsen (Gary); and nieces and nephews. Larry was deeply loved and will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Larry will be remembered for his love of history, his keen interest in genealogical research, his passion for the New York Yankees, and for his calm and genteel manner. He was an avid reader and would often share historical facts and stories. Abraham Lincoln was one of his inspirations. And he loved the beach. In fact, one of his last comments was that he wanted to walk on the beach with his wife, Gerry. May he rest in peace on an eternal, idyllic beach.

Memorial services will be held in the fall in New Jersey and Arizona. Donations in Larry’s memory can be made to the National Association of the Deaf, the American Cancer Society, or Father Thomas CoughlinDominican Missionaries of the Deaf Apostolate.

Miss Deaf Arizona Pageant Contestants Deadline - May 31st

The Miss Deaf Arizona Pageant Committee is looking to recruit eligible contestants for the 2011 Pageant. The eligibility rules for the contestant to qualify, she must be:

* Deaf or Hard of Hearing whose age shall not be less than eighteen nor more than 27 years by September 24 of the Pageant. A copy of birth certificate or other satisfactory document as proof of age shall be required. The contestant must submit a formal audiogram signed by a certified audiologist, showing evidence of bilateral and unaided hearing loss.

* The contestant must be a United States citizen before submitting an application for the State Pageant.

* The contestant must be single, never have been married nor had a marriage annulled, and must have never given birth to a child.

* The contestant must never have been convicted of any crimes, other than minor traffic infractions (i.e., no felony).

* The contestant may qualify for the state pageant before graduation from high school, but must be a high school graduate by the time of the national pageant.

* The contestant must have fluent receptive and expressive sign communication skills.

15th Anniversary Phoenix Pride Parade starts at 11 am. Be there early at the intersection of 3rd Street & Osborn at Circle K so you'll have better visibility of the interpreters on the judges' platform.

Phoenix Pride is noon to 9 pm on April 16th and 17th. Please make sure you buy your tickets online before you come. At the gate is $20 dollars per day, but online, you can get a weekend pass for $25 or a day pass for $15. Get your pink "SN" badge for access to the reserved spot in front of the main stage. Security guard will be checking for those badges. Due to limited space in the reserved section in front of the main stage, only one friend can come in per person with "SN" badge. A "SN" badge is not considered a ticket to get into the festival. We have interpreters available at your disposal during the festival. Go to the information booth to sign up your request for interpreter. The next one available will go with you to the booths you want to talk to the vendors or exhibitors about their services, etc. Also, we have 4 smaller stages, you can also ask for interpreters for those events as you wish. Please make sure you make your reservations at the information booth.

30,000 people are expected for the weekend and 10,000 are expected for the parade alone. Be there or be square! Looking forward to seeing you all this fun-filled weekend!

ASDB's 2010 Old Pueblo Riders' Ride for the Kids - April 17th

Thank you for supporting the 2010 Old Pueblo Riders' Ride for the Kids
of the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB). The 8th Annual Ride
is scheduled for Sunday, April 17th.

As in past years, the ride begins at the ASDB, 1200 West Speedway. Come
as early as 8:00 am, meet the kids and teachers, and have breakfast
cooked by the Catalina Lions Club. The last bike will be out of ASDB at
noon. The route is about 70 miles, and all the stops are kid-friendly.

The ride ends at the American Legion, Post 109, 15921 South Houghton
Road (the one with the airplane in the front of the building). They have
great facilities and will have a live band and lots of food and beverages.

As always, the kids at the school did the artwork for this year's shirt.
We will have long-sleeve adult shirts, short-sleeve children's shirts,
and women's tank tops. The shirts this year are light tan.

We will have a live auction and lots of great prizes, vendors,
diversions, and fantastic people. We sincerely hope to see you again
this year! Your support is important to us and the ASDB.

Register for the ride by sending the attached form by April 13th, and
save $5 on the registration fee. Order your shirts now so you will be

3rd Annual Deaf Family Retreat - April 15-17

3rd Annual Deaf Family Retreat will be held at the Copper Basin Bible Camp in Prescott, Arizona on April 15-17, 2011.

$15.00 per camper expect for children up to 18. $15.00 will be included the Bible lessons, activities, 2-night cabin, and snacks/meals. We have the voice interpreter for the hearing audience. We also provide day care and the programs for the young and teenagers. We do provide van transportation to the camp.

Chad Entinger, Deaf Missions Director from Council Bluffs, Iowa will be a keynote speaker. The theme will be "From Bondage to Freedom".

On Saturday, April 9, 2011, the 12 agencies of the Disability Empowerment Center of Arizona (DEC) are pleased to announce their sponsorship of a community Health & Wellness Fair. The 2011 Fair will offer multiple education and exhibition opportunities to the general public and healthcare professionals who are in search for answers to the complex questions surrounding chronic illnesses and disabilities.

The day-long fair will feature six presentations held here in the Nina Mason Pulliam Conference Center on the topics of assistive technology, depression in chronic illness, naturopathic medicine, diabetes, special needs trusts and relationships & intimacy; as well as, fitness demonstrations, health screenings, healthy, but inexpensive cooking demonstrations and an exposition of community partners. Phoenix Lesbian and Gay Pride - Interpreter Volunteers Needed - April 16th & 17th

(less formally known as “Phoenix Pride”) is a community nonprofit organized to celebrate and promote the history, courage, diversity, and future prosperity of the metropolitan Phoenix LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender) community. The long-term vision of the organization is to increase world awareness of the LGBT community to eliminate homophobia, transphobia and discrimination."

Phoenix Pride is currently looking for interpreter volunteers to help with their Festival on April 16 and 17, 2011.

This is a great, great opportunity for interpreters who need the hours of experience and exposure to ASL. It is also another opportunity to meet people who are visiting Arizona, or meeting local friends showing up out of the blue you have not seen for a long time at the Phoenix Pride weekend.

We need interpreter volunteers to do floor interpreting with the 4 smaller stages and festival booth vendors. Minimum to volunteer is 4 hours or more. Those who will at least 6 hours of volunteer will get a meal coupon. Cold water and snacks will also be provided to all volunteers.

We need:
1 (maybe two) personal interpreter for Special Needs Chair (noon to 9 pm, Sat & Sun - one person for both days or one person per day)
2 parade interpreters (Sat 10 am to 2 pm, once parade is finished, parade interpreter becomes floor interpreters until 2 pm)
4 or more floor interpreters (from 2 pm to 6 pm)

We also have a few Deaf volunteers and would also need interpreters for them. If you are interested to be an interpreter volunteer, please send an email to specialneeds@phoenixpride.org and a brief background and ASL-related work experience. We will send you a letter of service and hours within 15 days after the completion of the festival. There is also a volunteer appreciation party a week after the festival for those who helped out on April 16th and 17th!

This is my 4th year of service. It has always been a fun, rewarding experience each year! I hope I am not forgetting any more details. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me!

Deaf Celebrities Present March 28

At Glendale Community College

Actress Deanne Bray and her husband, Troy Kotsur, are at Glendale Community College from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 28 in the Student Union room 104. Both Bray and Kotsur are well known deaf actors. Kotsur, born and raised in Mesa and an alumnus of Mesa Community College, has appeared on stage and in a number of films and television shows including “CSI-New York” and “Doc.”

Bray was the first deaf actress to star in a television series. For three seasons, she was the lead in "Sue Thomas FB Eye," about a real-life agent who worked for the FBI, aided by her hearing dog, Levi. Repeats of the show appear regularly on GMC cable. Bray also has been on "HEROES,” “CSI” and “Ellen,” as well as in several movies.

Bray was invited to speak at the college by GCC’s Foreign Language and Communications Department Chair Jim Reed. As GCC’s first deaf presenter, she will share a perspective about her life as a deaf person, as an actress and the reasons for her recent career change to teacher of the deaf.

Scrapbook Workshop - March 2011

Bliss workshop:
I cut all the pieces for all 4 projects shown in the Bliss WOTG guide (two sets of cards with 6 cards each, and two 2-page layouts) and was able to still have half of the paper packet left (needed one little piece from a 2nd sheet but if I were cutting again, I can avoid this). This means for you that want to accomplish a lot with a little, you can order just a half-pack of Bliss (all paper packs are $12.95) and one package of Irresistibles (the chipboard embellishments with a resist pattern that you can ink in any coordinating color - this is $4.95) and a few extra sheets of cardstock, and you can make everything exactly as shown at the workshop.

Option A: Complete kit, including stamp set and workshop guide: $35.66 (shipping and tax included)

Option B: Order a complete paper pack and a package of Irresistables: $21.31

Option C: Split a paper package & get extra cardstock only: $10.69

3rd Annual Deaf Family Retreat - April 16-18

3rd Annual Deaf Family Retreat will be held at the Copper Basin Bible Camp in Prescott, Arizona on April 16-18, 2011.

$15.00 per camper expect for children up to 18. $15.00 will be included the Bible lessons, activities, 2-night cabin, and snacks/meals. We have the voice interpreter for the hearing audience. We also provide day care and the programs for the young and teenagers. We do provide van transportation to the camp.

Chad Entinger, Deaf Missions Director from Council Bluffs, Iowa will be a keynote speaker. The theme will be "From Bondage to Freedom".

Chad Entinger was born in Edina, Minnesota. Chad accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and was baptized by his father in the Howard Lake Christian at and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1997, and a Master of Arts degree in Deaf Education in 1999 from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.,

Chad was ordained for Christian ministry work by the Howard Lake Christian Church on April 23, 2006. In June 2006, Chad served as the Associate Director at Deaf Missions. He became the Executive Director in November 2007.

Chad and Glory (formerly Somerville) have one daughter, Shekynah Ann, and three sons, Corban Peter, Davan Neal, and Jadon John. Chad and Glory are actively involved in serving God at Christ’s Church of the Deaf in Council Bluffs.

You may know our speaker, Heidi Levrik from her years at ACDHH. Now at Cochlear, Inc., she teaches doctors how to install these implants in the Operating Room. Heidi will overview hearing and hearing loss with terminology and the two Cochlear systems. You will learn the criteria for determining a good or bad candidate for this procedure. Interpreters will be able to use this background knowledge in pre- and post-operative follow up jobs with adults and children.

Many Deaf work in the computer industry or are training for it, as it is one of the most secure and well-paying industries. Yet you find that signs used in this 10-year old field are still being developed. Richard Vanover, M.S. in Information Technology from Capella University will teach interpreters in ASL helping to standardize the signs and reduce the inventing of computer signs in the classroom. He will open a computer and teach us the hardware parts and how they are used.

Helen Hilts, M.D., a diabetic herself, will explain the basic science, common complications and treatment approaches currently being used.

This Friday (morning or evening) at my home in Buckeye - we will be making some cards and scrapbook layouts.

This Saturday there's a class & scrapping all day in west Phoenix. (email or call me for exact location: sign4nona@cox.net or 480 281 8391) There's plenty of room to spread out and work on your projects. I will teach a monthly series of classes, the first will be on how to use your trimmer and measure and cut and you will receive a template to create a set of cards with. Then I will help each of you individually as needed with any of your questions. Come and crop all day beginning around 10 am until ??? Class will be around 1pm or so. Bring lunch/munchies, there is a refrigerator/microwave to use.

I will also have a lot of my papers and stamps for sale, so if you're looking for a bargain, come and choose your favorites!

I also have upcoming $5 card workshops and $5 scrapbook page workshops on Monday during the day and Wed evening, please let me know if you'd like to come. Or you can host a workshop and I will come to your home to do projects for you and your friends (such as Mother's Day cards or Birthday cards workshops, etc.)

We are offering Sign Language Interpretation in our Sunday morning service that begins at 9:30am. The service interpretation will include music and sermon. The Signer will be volunteering their time and skills; they are fluent in sign language but not certified.

CFF believes as Christians we are called to pray, teach, nurture, love, worship, and serve. One of our Core Values is to reach the lost. This is one more way to do just that. Finding a church that offers Sign Language is a challenge for the Deaf. We would like to meet that challenge by being able to offer it to you and your families. We want to reach the Deaf community and assist you in understanding the Word of God in a format you know. We are breaking through the communication barrier between hearing Pastors and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Contestants Needed for Miss Deaf Arizona Pageant by May 31st

The Miss Deaf Arizona Pageant Committee is looking to recruit eligible contestants for the 2011 Pageant. The eligibility rules for the contestant to qualify, she must be:

* The contestant must be a United States citizen before submitting an application for the State Pageant.

* The contestant must be single, never have been married nor had a marriage annulled, and must have never given birth to a child.

* The contestant must never have been convicted of any crimes, other than minor traffic infractions (i.e., no felony).

* The contestant may qualify for the state pageant before graduation from high school, but must be a high school graduate by the time of the national pageant.

* The contestant must have fluent receptive and expressive sign communication skills.

This workshop will provide participants practice in becoming comfortable working in this environment using a variety of communication modes: including general information on the varieties of deaf-blindness, causes, how to adjust the interpretation for clearer tactile understanding; providing visual information; positioning yourself comfortably and will touch on guiding.

12-2p Deciphering Medical Terminology: .2 CEUs in PS

The interpreters will be able to define the many medical terms including word roots, pre-fixes and suffixes used in the medical world and what they mean when combined. Many of the frequently used medications will also be identified with medical problems they are prescribed for. SPELLING of all will be provided.

The University of Arizona is an authorized CMP sponsor through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Participants will earn .4 CEU’s for each workshop. Failure to attend the workshop in its entirety will result in forfeiture of CEU’s. No partial CEU’s will be given.

MATA EXPO is considered one of the nations largest multicultural marketing events in US Deaf history. It is an opportunity for companies, organizations, and individuals with talents to show off their deaf / hard of hearing products to thousands of people at once and make announcements about new products and services. Arizona Deaf Community Needs (ADCN) subsidiary of Arizona Association of the Deaf is hosting our fourth annual holiday party on December 25, 2010 at Phoenix, Deaf Community Center, 1545 W. Osborn Road, Phoenix, Arizona. Start at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free!
